Legionella Risk

In circumstances where the Health & Safety at Work Act is applicable the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) L8 requires that a risk assessment be carried out to identify risks of legionella associated from water sources and work activities undertaken on the premises.

Most undertakings with hot water facilities will require such an assessment and it is a legal requirement where wet cooling towers or evaporative condensers are utilised.

To comply with their responsibilities under the Act, operators of cooling systems should:

• Identify and assess sources of risk
• Prepare a scheme for preventing or controlling such risk
• Keep records of the precautions
  
• Appoint a Responsible Person
